Opener trouble, sorted out part by part

When a garage door stops working, the opener gets blamed first. Sometimes it really is the opener. Other times it's a broken spring, a snapped cable, a bent track or a pair of sensors that have drifted out of line. A good repair starts with working out which one it is, so you only pay to fix what's actually wrong.

Everest Garage Doors is a family-owned, insured company based in Newton and run by owner Noam. We repair garage door openers for homeowners in Newton and the surrounding towns. Our technicians arrive in marked vehicles, and they clean up after every job.

We look at the whole system: the opener, the wall control, the remotes, the safety sensors, the travel limits and the way the door itself moves. If the door is out of balance or a spring has failed, the opener will struggle no matter how new it is, and we'll tell you that plainly.

Opener problems we commonly repair

Door won't close, or closes and then reverses. This is often a sensor that is dirty, bumped or misaligned, or a close limit that needs to be reset.

Door won't open. The cause may be the opener, a broken spring, or a disconnected trolley. The motor may hum or click while the door stays put.

Remote or wall button not working. The cause can be a dead battery, lost programming, a wiring fault or a worn control board.

Opener runs but the door doesn't move. We check the trolley, the drive chain or belt, and the drive gear.

Door stops partway or travels unevenly. We check the limit and force settings, and also whether the door itself is binding.

Loud grinding, rattling or jerking when the opener runs. This may come from worn parts in the opener, or from rollers and hardware on the door.

Garage door opener repair: common questions

Why does my garage door close and then reverse?

The most common cause is the safety sensors near the floor on each side of the door. If one is dirty, knocked out of line or blocked, the opener reverses as a safety measure. Wipe both lenses, check that both lights are steady and not blinking, and make sure nothing is in the way. If that doesn't help, the close limit setting or a door that binds on its way down may be the cause, and we can check both.

My garage door won't open. Is it the opener or a spring?

If you hear the motor run but the door doesn't move, the trolley may have disconnected from the door or the opener's drive parts may be worn. If the door feels very heavy when you lift it by hand with the opener disconnected, or if you heard a loud bang, a spring is the likely cause. Springs are under high tension, so don't try to lift the door against a broken spring. Call us and we'll sort out which part has failed.

My sensor light is blinking. What can I check before calling?

A blinking sensor light usually means the two sensors aren't lined up or something is blocking the beam. Clear anything in the path, wipe the lenses, and gently check that both sensors are pointing straight across at each other and are firmly mounted. If the light keeps blinking, or a wire looks damaged, we can repair or replace the sensor.

My garage door is stuck open at night. What should I do?

Keep people and pets clear of the door and don't force it down. Call us at (857) 420-4277. For urgent problems like a door stuck open or a broken spring, call after hours and we'll get back to you as soon as we can. Same-day service is available for stuck doors. We are closed on major holidays.

Should I repair my opener or replace it?

A repair usually makes sense when the problem is a sensor, remote, wire, gear or setting and the rest of the opener works well. If the motor or control board has failed, or the opener struggles even though the door is balanced, a new opener may be the better choice. We'll give you an honest recommendation and a flat-rate price for either one. See our opener installation page for more on chain, belt and wall-mount models.

How much does opener repair cost?

It depends on the part that has failed and the opener model. Our pricing is upfront and flat-rate, and estimates are free.

Why is my opener noisy or shaking the door?

Grinding, rattling and jerking can come from worn parts inside the opener, but worn rollers, dry hinges or an unbalanced door are just as common. A tune-up with lubrication and a balance check often quiets things down. We'll check the opener and the door so we fix the true source of the noise.
