Signs your garage door spring has broken

The springs do the heavy lifting in a garage door. They counterbalance the weight of the door so that you, or your opener, can raise it with little effort. When one breaks, the door suddenly becomes very heavy, and that is usually when people notice.

The most common sign is a loud bang from the garage, like something dropped or snapped. Other signs include a door that will not open even though the opener runs, an opener that strains or only lifts the door a few inches, a door that jerks or hangs crooked, or a visible gap in the spring above the door.

If you suspect a broken spring, please do not try to lift the door by hand, and do not keep pressing the opener button. Springs hold a lot of stored tension, and a heavy door with no counterbalance can come down fast. Call us, and we will take it from there.

Broken spring questions, answered

What does a loud bang from the garage mean?

A sudden loud bang is often a torsion spring breaking. The spring is under heavy tension, so when it lets go it makes a sharp noise. Check whether the door still opens normally. If it does not, or looks uneven, stop using it and call us. Please do not try to lift the door yourself.

How can I tell if it is the spring or the opener?

If the opener motor runs but the door barely moves or will not lift, the spring is a likely cause. If you pull the release handle and the door feels extremely heavy by hand, that also points to a broken spring. If the opener makes no sound at all, the problem may be power or the opener itself. We can tell you which it is once we look at it.

How much does garage door spring replacement cost?

The price depends on the door, the type of spring and what else needs attention. We offer free estimates and upfront, flat-rate pricing. Call (857) 420-4277 to talk through your door.

Is it safe to open the door manually with a broken spring?

We recommend against it. Without the spring, the full weight of the door is on you, the cables and the opener. Forcing it can hurt someone or damage the door or track. Leave the door as it is and call us.

My door is stuck open at night. What should I do?

Try to keep the door area clear and avoid moving the door. For urgent issues like a broken spring or a door stuck open, call us after hours and we will get back to you as soon as we can. We are open 7 days a week, and we are closed on major holidays.

Should I replace one spring or both?

Many doors use two springs, and they wear at a similar rate. We will look at the other spring when we are there and tell you what we see so you can decide.

Can you replace springs on my brand of door?

We repair and install most major garage door brands, including Clopay, Amarr, C.H.I. Overhead Doors, Wayne Dalton, Raynor, Overhead Door, Windsor Door and Haas Door. If you are not sure what you have, describe it when you call.

What payment methods do you accept?

We accept cash, credit card, debit card, check, Zelle and Venmo.
