What a garage door cable does, and what happens when it fails

Your garage door is lifted by springs, but the cables are what carry the weight. A steel cable runs along each side of the door, from a bracket near the bottom corner up to a drum at the top. When the springs turn, the drums wind the cables and the door rises evenly. If one cable frays, snaps or jumps off its drum, the door loses balance on that side.

The signs are usually easy to spot. The door hangs crooked or tilts to one side. One side rises faster than the other. You see a loose, dangling or unwound cable. The door is stuck partway, or the opener strains and stops. Sometimes there is a loud snap, followed by a door that will not move.

A cable under tension can cause injury, and a door that is hanging unevenly can come down without warning. Please do not try to lift it by hand, force the opener or re-thread the cable yourself. Stay clear of the door and call us.

We repair garage door cables on both residential doors and the openers that run them. We will look at the whole lift system, since cables, drums, springs and rollers wear together. The cable may be the only part that failed, or it may be a sign of another problem, such as a worn spring or a door that has gone off track. We will tell you what we find before we start the work.

Garage door cable repair questions

My cable snapped or came off the drum. Why is the door crooked?

Each cable supports one side of the door. When one fails, that side is no longer held up evenly, so the door tilts and may jam in the tracks. Leave it alone and call us, because the door may be heavier and less stable than it looks.

Can I lift the door by hand or use the opener to get it open?

We advise against it. Forcing a crooked door can bend the tracks, damage the opener or drop the door suddenly. Keep people and cars clear and call us.

Is it the cable, the spring or the opener?

A door that will not open can have several causes. A loud bang often points to a broken spring, a crooked door usually points to a cable, and an opener that hums without lifting may be disconnected from the door. We check each one during the visit.

Is a cable repair a DIY job?

We do not recommend it. The cables are under heavy tension from the springs, and a mistake can cause serious injury or damage the door. This is a job for a trained technician.

How much does cable repair cost?

The cost depends on the door and what else needs attention, so we do not quote a number before we see it. We give you upfront, flat-rate pricing and our estimates are free, so you know what you are paying before work begins.

Can you come the same day?

Same-day service is available for broken springs and stuck doors. If a cable problem has left your door stuck, call us and we will tell you what we can do.

My door got stuck open at night. What should I do?

Stay clear of the door and call us. After hours, leave a message about the problem and we will get back to you as soon as we can. We are closed on major holidays.

Should I repair the door or replace it?

If the door is in good shape and only the cable failed, repair usually makes sense. If panels are damaged or the door has repeated problems, we will go over replacement with you and give you a free estimate.
