What it means when a garage door is off track
A garage door rides on rollers that sit inside two metal tracks, one on each side of the opening. When a roller pops out of its track, the door goes crooked. One side may hang lower than the other. The door may jam halfway, make a scraping noise, or refuse to move at all.
Sometimes the door looks only slightly out of line. That can still be a problem. A door that is off track is no longer carried evenly, and the opener, cables, springs and panels can all take extra strain if it keeps running.
If your door is crooked, stuck, or looks like it is coming away from the wall, stop using it and give us a call.
Why we don't suggest forcing it back yourself
It is tempting to push a roller back into the track and hope for the best. We would advise against it. A garage door is heavy, and the springs and cables that hold its weight are under a lot of tension. A door that is off track can shift or drop without warning, and a bent track or a loose cable can make it worse.
The cause matters too. A door usually comes off track for a reason: a bumped track, a worn or broken roller, a cable that has slipped, a spring that has failed, or something that blocked the door as it closed. If only the roller is put back and the cause is left alone, the door often comes off again.
Our technicians look at the whole door, not just the spot where it jumped.

Garage door off track: common questions
What causes a garage door to come off track?
The usual causes are a worn or broken roller, a bent or loose track, a cable that has slipped or snapped, a failed spring, or something hitting the door as it moves. We look for the cause so the door stays on its track after the repair.
Can I put the door back on the track myself?
We would not recommend it. The door is heavy and the springs and cables are under tension, so a door that is off track can shift or fall suddenly. DIY fixes can also bend the track or hide the real cause. It is safer to leave the door alone and call us.
My garage door is stuck open at night. What should I do?
Keep people and cars clear of the door and do not try to force it. Call us after hours and we will get back to you as soon as we can. We are closed on major holidays, so a call on a holiday may wait until we reopen.
I heard a loud bang before the door went crooked. What happened?
A loud bang often means a torsion spring has broken. Do not lift the door by hand, because the spring is what carries its weight. Same-day service is available for broken springs and stuck doors, so call us and we will take a look.
The cable snapped or came off the drum. Is that the same as off track?
They are related. When a cable fails, one side of the door loses support, so the door hangs crooked and can leave the track. We repair both the cable and the track problem together.
How much does an off-track repair cost?
It depends on what is behind it: a roller that needs resetting, a bent track section, a damaged panel, or a cable or spring that also needs replacing. We give you an upfront, flat-rate price once we have seen the door, and estimates are free.
Should I repair or replace a door that came off track?
Many doors can be repaired and put back to work. If panels are badly bent or cracked, or the door has been damaged more than once, replacement may make more sense. We will tell you what we see and let you choose.
My door is noisy and grinding but still on track. Should I worry?
Grinding often comes from worn rollers or a dry, unlubricated door. Dealing with it early can stop it from leading to an off-track problem. Our tune-up and roller replacement services cover this.
